It's not about you. My friend Tim often speaks on that very topic to Christians in the arts. When we give our lives to Christ, they belong to Him, that means everything even our work. Our work and our lives stop being about us and start being about Jesus and the kingdom. I did a sketch not too long ago that illustrated it. There was an artist looking more than a little like Gollum standing before stacks and stacks of paintings all featuring a ring. In the foreground is Jesus reaching for the painting, but Gollum (er, I mean the artist) is cowering and trying to push Jesus away. I call the piece "Prescious" and I will display it on the web site when and if it ever gets painted.
How precious is your work to you? Is it time to take a personal inventory. Do you need to get a handle on your priorities? Is Jesus first in your life? Would your family agree with your answer? Your coworkers? How about your Lord?
One guy who got a handle on this is Toby Mac. He made me check myself. I was at the Creation festival and heard him speaking of a paradigm shift in his life recently. He spoke of years of asking God to bless what he was doing but has now shifted to ask God to allow him to be a part of what God is doing. That is so important. It seems small but it is huge and profound. God is God. His plan is perfect and we should hold onto it for dear life. Instead, too often, we try to coerce God to inject Himself into our good intentioned, though often flawed plans. Follow God. Use your work to fit into His plan after all, it's not about you!
God bless,
Dave
