OK this one has nothing to do with the arts, but it is an important and timely topic and one I have wrestled with. The following question was posted on one of the lists I belong to. My response follows.

"I just read where the John Allen Muhammad will die for his crimes.
My question is this.
How can Christians who say they are "Pro Life" sentence some one or support the death penalty?"

Sin has consequence. When a person chooses to commit murder, they know the possible consequences. There is a choice that is made. It's not different than a person who skydives knowing there is a possibility that the chute won't open. There is cause and effect and a risk that is taken.

In the case of prolife, the cause and effect is different. The person having sex is the one taking the risk, the pregnancy is the consequence. They know there's a possibility that their actions bring the consequence and still they proceed. The person created has not made a choice, just muhammad's victim's did not make a choice. The only one without a choice is the victim.

Am I pro-death penalty? I don't know. When it's in the abstract I can be against it, but were one of my children one of his victim's, I'm not sure where I would stand. I don't want to be wishy washy here, but I also don't want to be a hypocrite because I am isolated from the pain. My prayer is that I will never know the pain first hand, but that if I ever do that I will rest in the Lord's wisdom and in His arms.

God bless,
Dave
